I started when I was a kid. It may sound funny but part of my inspiration was the Back to the Future movie…although I did not consider that seriously until the very last stage of my University degree.

@idunno @em210198 I was quite interested in science when I was at school, but it wasn’t until 4 years ago when I did some travelling, including spending 3 months at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, that I really got back into science in a big way. I loved the Monday morning meetings at HVO when all the scientists got together to discuss how Kilauea volcano had been erupting over the previous week and what it might do next. I was really surprised by the fact that they didn’t know everything, but how they worked together to try and find answers. I found that a really stimulating environment to be in.

I liked science and math off and on until I got to high school (ages 13-17), and then I really liked it! Mostly it was because I had good teachers, and because I got two years of biology. Because I liked being smart and identified with other geeky people, I think I also identified with being a scientist and so developed my knowledge for that reason as well.

I think it was when I started watching star trek with my grandad and it all looked like fun- I wanted to be one of those guys! saving lives and exploring the galaxy.

I remember being very young and getting jealous that my mum bought my older brother science-related presents when she was only buying me arts and crafts presents. So I think I snook into his room and tried to get his little microscope to work but didn’t know how it worked… so I think I had a vague interest from an early age, but it developed more when I was at high school.
