Haha – it is fun! I think we are all really just doing it for the experiance. Remeber most of us will end up with nothing (well, I think we get a mug maybe). Even the prize cannot be spent on ourselves it is to be used for public engagement.

It is all for the love of science!

We get mugs?! That is news to me :p I applied for this event before I knew there was a prize! Then I found out that you could win £500 to spend on public engagement (so on an event/object to best communicate science to the general public) and I thought that was a brilliant idea. There are 23 zones this year and that means there will be 23 scientists who get the opportunity to spend the money on spreading science knowledge and more importantly science fun!!!! I thought that was a stroke of genius! As not only do I love science but I also love telling people about science. So I am definitely not in this for the money and I am loving answering all the questions… but I wouldn’t also love to win just so the fun doesn’t end and I get to do a public engagement project with the money!

I’m with Jamie and Emily. I’m here for the experience and enjoyment, because there’s only a 1/5 chance in getting the money, and the money will barely be enough to get an outreach project off the ground. I still want to win, don’t get me wrong, but I’m having an awful lot of fun hanging out with you all in the meantime!

@lukealanpatrick If the chance to communicate science saves a person’s life or inspires one of you, then yes, answering all these questions will be worth £500. But ditto the others, this is turning out to be a really fun experience, challenging with everyone’s questions, and I’ve made some great friends amongst the scientists in several zones 🙂

This has been a great opportunity for all of us taking part of IAS. To answer your questions, to know what those are, to get an idea of what you find interesting, and to tell you a story from our own perspective worth much more than £500.
Moreover, we have also learned a lot as well!
