      Hmm, this is tough because I’m not a specialist in communication. I hope you’ll forgive me for answering a related question. And then you can follow up in the comments!

      Communication can happen lots of different ways, from chemicals and smells, to visuals like facial expression, to sounds. And there are so many other species that communicate in interesting ways! But, try as we might to teach other animals to talk, they cannot.

      My understanding is that verbal communication – talking – was very important for our individual reproductive success, so adaptations evolved along the way to make it easier. These adaptations include parts of our brain, our throat, tongue and lips.

      How does that sound to you? Maybe Emily can say more about the brain part!
